4th Annual Record Store Day

April 18, 2011

On Saturday, April 16 we studious music lovers celebrated our favorite consumer based holiday, the 4th Annual Record Store Day.  Where clothes hogs have Nordstrom’s summer sale, and bargainers have Black Friday, we celebrated in hundreds of record stores across the nation to pick up the vinyl we wouldn’t have boughten on any other given day.  I participated at Deadbeat Records in Moscow, ID and was happy to pick up the recently released The Head and The Heart on wax. Hope everyone picked up their overpriced records on the cheap.  Sadly this day has led me to recall my past hometown record store, Island Records (where I remember buying CDs from all my lawn mowing money) that has since gone under after a Target moved into the community.  So be sure to stick it to corporate controlled record stores and go out and buy from your local joe.  Recently, I watch the short documentary I Need That Record! The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store which is great to check out if you like the little man and guerrilla filmmaking.  Below are some pictures of the line outside of Amoeba Records on Haight of the Save KUSF members.

breakfasasquatch 2011, son.

April 13, 2011

Gripe haters, but while you’ve been complaining and updating your last posts on SXSW, we’ve been regrinding.  Epic playlist time has dropped on The Breakfast Driver in a whole new way, Sassy style. Sasquatch has had some real epic moments, for example the solo dancer that sparked the lawn trot of 2009 (to Santigold though, which is a real boner jam). There has also been some epic catastrophes as well, for example the hail storm of 2006.  Or, perhaps if your pretentious dissatisfaction wasn’t fulfilled with this years lineup just look at past headliners (Coldplay, Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson) to remind yourself that you were never part of the drunken debauchery of the campground, and by hating on Sasquatch you are somehow a greater music lover than the rest of us.  Haters, yes I may have locked my keys in the ignition of my car along with the tickets in 2007. But hey, at least I made it to the campground to borrow a hammer from a smashed Canadian to bash the window, only to get into the venue shortly after.  Haters, it’s not too late to escape your submission to complete subordinate chromewave, put a bird on it self identity ascriptions.  Here are some acts from this year’s sassy.

doe bay festival – August 11 to 14

April 11, 2011

So you are going to miss Sasquatch. You don’t want to fight the obnoxious crowd at Capitol Hill Block Party either. I have a solution for you. Doe Bay Festival is at held the reclusive Doe Bay Resort on the San Juans on August 11 to 14.  Previous artists include Drew Grow, The Head and The Heart, The Fruit Bats, and David Bazan.  As far as I can read and find out about it, this extremely exclusive festival provides everything lost in today’s festival scene. Check it out:

Tickets are going on sale May 1 at 10 a.m. and are expected to sell out that day.  The lineup will be released on June 1.  Supposedly inexpensive organic food will be sold, presumably to accompany their $2 beer garden. Hope to see everyone there!

The Breakfast Driver 3/30: when someone great is gone

If a Cougar basketball loss (and a ridiculously bad one at that), sideways rain, and going live without Z this morning wasn’t enough… the breakup of one of my generation’s greatest bands this week was the biggest downer.  LCD Soundsystem will be playing their final show at Madison Square Garden on April 2.  Active since 2001, the end of LCD brings a new chapter to the so-called “hipster” episode.  We commemorated the breakup with playing a large block of music at the end of the show.

Craft Spells // Scandinavian Crush

Dirty Beaches // Sweet 17
